The Nissan Altima has been sold since 1993 in the U.S. market as a four-door sedan. For the first year of its existence, it fits in a compact size class, in the last two generations, has been upsized to the middle class, and sold as a four-door sedan and two-door coupe.

The 1993-1997 and 1998-2001 Altimas is a compact sedan powered by a four-cylinder engine, gearbox offers a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. They are the successors Stanza sedan, and doing well for the Nissan Toyota Corolla.

2002 Nissan AltimaIn 2002, the third generation Altima is the first of a new wave of dramatic styles Nissan models at launch, drawing great praise for a typical line. That the 2002-2006 models offered 2.5-liter four and 3.5-liter V-6, with a standard five-speed manual or automatic (four-speed four-, five-speed for the V-6). SE-R models include not only the sportiest 250-horsepower V-6, but also a revised suspension settings, 18-inch wheels and tires, and some styling flourish to set the car apart from the standard Altimas.
Restyled for 2007, the current generation Altima continues as a more stylish alternative to middle-of-the-mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord are popular, as well as the Hyundai up-and-coming Sonata and domestic competitors such as the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu. This is probably the most important to displace Nissan Maxima as Nissan's largest sedan, although the current Altima and Maxima shared a lot of their equipment running. The Altima also has featured one of the largest application of continuously variable transmission, which has replaced the conventional automatic gearbox in both body styles.
The Nissan Altima is somewhat refreshed for the 2010 model year with a new grille with two new interior materials and expanded list of options. Continue to include four engine options and a V-6, in this case a 175-hp, 2.5-liter four or a powerful 275-hp, 3.5-liter V-6. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is standard on the sedan and coupe, with a six-speed manual is offered only on the coupe.
Altima Hybrid is available through the 2011 model year. Paired, specially tuned 162-hp version of the 2.5-liter four to a customized version of Toyota's Synergy Hybrid Drive system, producing gas mileage rated at 35 mpg city, 33 mpg highway. The model was dropped for the 2012 model year as the Nissan accelerated production of all-electric Leaf hatchback him.
For the 2013 model year Altima sedan will be introduced. Back in New York auto show 2012, the new four door brings over four-and six-cylinder engines, and a CVT. In the 182-horsepower four-cylinder version, improved CVT means the sedan gets EPA-estimated 38 miles per gallon highway, among the best in its class, with a 270-hp V-6, CVT gets paddle controls and programmed "shift" points simulate the feel of a conventional automatic gearbox. The new Altima also adopt more safety and technology, with standard Bluetooth and audio streaming, and available wide-angle rearview camera, lane-departure warning system, and satellite radio. The NHTSA gives it five stars for overall crash-test protection.

Two-door Nissan Altima Coupe carry over unchanged for the 2013 model year, in a single configuration - as a four-cylinder engine, CVT has two doors. A new Nissan Altima Hybrid, with supercharging and the batteries and motors applied to 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, is expected to arrive after the 2013 model year.
