It all started when a car designer by the name of Gordon Murray, the same man who designed Formula 1 cars for both Brabham and McLaren. going through several candidates, the McLaren team settled on BMW
designed engine 6.0-liter V12 that weighs in at 266 pounds and yet
produces 627 horsepower. It has a powerful engine means generating a lot of heat in the engine compartment that can damage the carbon fiber components. Solution McLaren? They have compartments lined with gold foil for insulation. Combined
with a light frame frame, the power to weight ratio McLaren F1 can only
be described as amazing: 550 horsepower per ton.For a very long time, the McLaren F1 was the fastest car in the world, and even now, it is still very hard to beat. Zero
to 62 mph comes in 3.2 seconds, zero to 100 miles per hour comes in 6.3
seconds and a top speed of nearly 248 mph performance numbers. But this car is more than just that. McLaren F1 has set the industry standard in sports cars. Featuring innovative techniques that have been far ahead of its time, it was one of the greatest cars ever built. Indeed, it lived up to the dream of Gordon Murray built the car off the main road.
